Notre Dame Wins ACC, 71-58 Over FSU

GREENSBORO -- Notre Dame won its second consecutive ACC tournament championship Sunday, defeating Florida State, 71-58. A late first-half run that gave the Irish a double-digit lead they'd never relinquish.

Jewell Loyd (left) scored 18 points for the Irish and was named the Most Valuable Player. Brianna Turner joined Loyd on the All-Tournament first team, while Madison Cable and Taya Reimer were second team selections.

GREENSBORO -- In a game marked more by missed layups and turnovers than smooth offensive execution, Notre Dame survived a spirited Duke effort in a 55-49 victory. It was a second straight game for Notre Dame (30-2) that they did just enough to win but looked far from impressive as a team. For Duke, they survived a long cold streak in the first half and going down by double digits to make a real game of it in the last five minutes. READ MORE

GREENSBORO -- Florida State erupted early in the game, blowing out to a 24 point lead over an exhausted Louisville team, then had to withstand a furious rally that brought the Cardinals to within 45-43 in the second half. The Noles got their second wind and knocked out the scrappy Cards, 66-51, on their way to their first ever ACC championship game. There should perhaps be no surprise as to how this game unfolded... Durham, NC -- Notre Dame repeated as ACC Regular Season Champions, as did Jewell Loyd as the ACC Women's Basketball Digest Player of the Year. Irish freshman Brianna Turner is our 2015 Digest ACC Rookie of the Year, and she also joins Loyd on our five player All-ACC first team. Duke's Elizabeth Williams is the Digest ACC Defensive Player of the Year (a repeat honor) and also a first-team All-ACC selection. Our 2015 ACC Coach of the Year is Suzie McConnell-Serio of Pitt (19-10, 9-7 ACC), who led the Panthers to a seventh place league finish and likely NCAA berth. Read More...

While Notre Dame is still atop the ACC standings at the midway mark, there's no question that the ACC is far more competitive this season than expected. The huge influx of frosh and relatively weak senior classes have made the ACC unpredictable, as younger players tend to be less consistent but also show a great capacity for improvement. Squads like Duke, Clemson and Pitt have multiple frosh starters, but every team has at least freshman of note.

At the top of the league, Notre Dame and Florida State are even with one loss each, with the Irish having narrowly defeating the Noles. Notre Dame still has Jewell Loyd (our pick for Midseason Player of the Year) and having the best player in the country means everyone else has to try a little harder to beat them.
