Final Four | |
Notre Dame's quest for perfection in 2014 fell one game shy
of their ultimate goal, but not before
knocking off ACC foe Maryland (28-7) in the National Semifinals, 87-61. Sadly
for the Irish (37-1), their matchup with Connecticut was equally one-sided,
as the Huskies rolled to a 79-58 win in the National Championship game. It
was the ninth title for UConn, who enjoyed their fifth perfect season in
program history. | |
Elite Eight | |
Two ACC teams advanced to the 2014 NCAA Women's Final Four in
Nashville as top seed Notre Dame prevailed over Baylor, 88-69, and Maryland
survived a furious Louisville rally to win 76-73. North Carolina took an early lead but fell at Stanford, 74-65. Our correspondent Megan Bishop Moore filed this report. Later in the week we'll have a preview of Sunday's Maryland vs. Notre Dame national semifinal, including a look at how the season-ending injury to Natalie Achonwa will affect this matchup. |

Sweet Sixteen | |
The ACC claimed three spots in the Elite Eight as
all remaining league representatives were victorious over the weekend. Our
Digest spotlight game was #4 UNC's 65-58 upset of #1 South Carolina
in the Stanford Regional. Freshman Diamond DeShields overcame two first half injuries
to score a team-high 19 points as the Tar Heels moved on to face #2 Stanford
in Tuesday's late game.
Also on Sunday, #4 seed Maryland sent #1 seed Tennessee packing with a 73-62 win. Terp senior Alyssa Thomas would not be denied, dominating with 33 points and 13 boards. Maryland will next face the tough task of #3 seed Louisville on the Cardinals' home floor, a rematch of the 2009 Raleigh Regional that pits former Maryland assistant Jeff Walz against Brenda Frese. Louisville won the 2009 matchup 77-60. Finally, on Saturday #1 seed Notre Dame had little trouble with #5 seed Oklahoma State, rolling to an 89-72 win on their home floor and a Monday 7:30 PM matchup with #2 seed Baylor. Senior Natalie Achonwa starred with the stellar stat line of 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and two steals. |
