GREENSBORO -- Syracuse sank 12 three-pointers and full-court pressed N.C. State into submission Friday night, eliminating the Wolfpack and advancing to Saturday's semifinal round against second seed Louisville. Syracuse made two major runs when they needed them most, starting with a 10-0 run in the first quarter that gave them their first big lead at 9. The second came as State coach Wes Moore's troops rallied to retake the lead in the third quarter, before the Orange went on a 12-2 stretch that put them in the lead to stay.

The Orange shot 44 percent from beyond the arc, with five of their 12 three pointers coming from sharpshooting Brianna Butler. Butler finished with 17 points, one of five Syracuse players to score in double figures. Alexis Peterson scored 18 on the night to lead the orange, while Brittany Sykes dropped in 15.

"That's what we do, we're going to play points per possession," coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We're going to pressure you and shoot the ball, and that's what we did tonight. We didn't really turn them over, and we don't turn them over a ton. They were amazing against our pressure, but they play so fast and we don't allow them to run their offense, and that's the biggest thing with them, and it's huge we didn't let them run their sets so we can play fast and get some threes in transition."

Syracuse's trademark press helped force 18 N.C State turnovers, which resulted in 29 points for the Orange. N.C. State owned the battle in the paint, but it simply didn't matter much if they couldn't guard they perimeter...and they couldn't.

Miah Spencer led the Wolfpack with 22 points, followed by 14 points from Jennifer Mathurin. While the Wolfpack didn't play badly, the loss may be critical to their hopes for an NCAA Tournament bid. They, like Georgia Tech and (gulp) Duke, all have a long wait to find out their postseason fates.

Top Performers

  1. Brianna Butler : 17 points, 2 rebounds. Butler was 5-10 from the three point line Friday night, while the Wolfpack only made 4 threes as a team..

  2. Alexis Peterson : 18 points, 3 assists. Peterson was also 5 for 6 from the free throw line on the evening.

  3. Miah Spencer, N.C. State : 22 points, 6 rebounds. Spencer played all 40 minutes and also made 12 of 15 from the free throw line.
