Markeisha Gatling scored 21 points and grabbed 16 boards before leaving with a knee injury. That stake proved to be more than enough for #4 seed NC State to roll to a 79-63 ACC quarterfinal win over #5 seed Syracuse in power-plagued Greensboro.

GREENSBORO --In a wacky game marked by delays thanks to the late winter ice and snow storm in Greensboro, NC State (25-6) bounced back from a lethargic first half performance with an 18-0 run in the second half to knock off Syracuse (22-9), 79-63. State got off to a strong start, blowing out to a 14-9 lead. State got easy looks in part because the Orange kept turning the ball over. The Orange went on an 18-4 run to take control of the game behind four three pointers, including two by star guard Brianna Butler. The Orange went on their run just when State subbed in for center Markeisha Gatling and guard Miah Spencer. Coach Wes Moore was using various media timeouts and juggling players in and out to rest his desperately thin team.

The Pack stayed within striking distance for most of the rest of the half as both teams got scoring from a number of its secondary threats. A trey by the Orange's shooting specialist La 'Shay Taft gave the Orange their biggest lead at nine. Both teams shot around 43% in the first half, but the Orange got easier looks thanks to its press generating seven steals. The Orange got most of their fourteen second-chance points thanks to threes after offensive rebounds. For the first five minutes of the second half, it looked like the Orange were going to hold State at arm's length. They were playing tough interior defense and got back-to-back threes by Isabella Slim and Butler. Meanwhile, State was missing threes and blowing layups. Burke drove in for a three point play that sparked the Pack. An offensive foul by big Syracuse center Shakeya Leary put her on the bench with her third foul, and that more than anything led to State's run.

Frosh center Briana Day was given the assignment of guarding Gatling one-on-one. The Pack were repeatedly able to throw the ball inside to Gatling, where she easily and repeatedly scored against Day. After Syracuse coach Quentin Hillsman called a timeout when Gatling scored yet again (after blocking Day at the other end), he ran out to the floor and got in Day's face, pleading with and screaming at her. However, it was too late at this point, especially when the various blackouts occurred in the Coliseum. Gatling pushed the lead to 61-49 with nine minutes to go with yet another layup, though she went out of the game on the next play when she somehow managed to injure her leg. It was an odd injury, because she wasn't tangled up, she didn't fall, nor was she even running. There's no update on her status at this point, though initial x-rays were negative and she wasn't in great pain before leaving the Coliseum. That could have given the Orange the break they needed, but instead deep reserve Breezy Williams hit a three with the shot clock running down that made it a fifteen point lead for the Pack. The Orange fought back, but State kept milking the clock and getting key scores, like a stickback by Williams to push the lead back to twelve. The closest the Orange came was within nine with 1:24 left, but they were held scoreless the rest of the way. The Pack will now go on to meet undefeated Notre Dame in the ACC semifinals.

Top Performers

  1. Markeisha Gatling, NC State. 28 points, 7 rebounds. Gatling destroyed the Orange inside, especially when Shakeya Leary went out with foul trouble. She established a career high before she went out of the game with a leg injury; her status is uncertain for tomorrow's game.

  2. Kody Burke, NC State. 21 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists. Burke wasn't especially efficient on offense (6-19) from the floor, but she did her damage with effort plays and from the foul line.

  3. Brittney Sykes, Syracuse. 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks. State did a great job of keeping the ball out of her hands (just eight shots), but Sykes was still able to do some damage at both ends of the floor.

Game Analysis

Why NC State Won: The Wolfpack figured out Syracuse's zone and got great looks for Gatling during a period where Syracuse was forced to use slender Briana Day to guard the big center. The Wolfpack completely turned around the hustle stats in the second half. In the first half, the Orange had a 14-8 edge in second chance points; in the second half, it was 11-3 in favor of the Wolfpack Women. State also did a better job of closing out on Syracuse's shooters in the second half, forcing them into some panicked shots.

Why Syracuse Lost: The Orange didn't get enough scoring balance to keep up with the Pack, and their post players looked especially shaky against Gatling. Leary and Day combined to go 3-12 from the floor against the bigger State players, and Syracuse's inability to make easy shots during State's run put them in far too great a hole to recover.

The Game Turned When...: The Wolfpack went on an 18-0 run over a five minute stretch in the second half, turning a nine point deficit into a nine point lead. Gatling had twelve points during the run and Burke six. It didn't hurt that the multiple power outages gave a short-handed State club several unexpected bonus timeouts. State then scored seven in a row after an Orange foul shot to take full control of the game.

X-Factor: Breezy Williams. The NC State wing is a senior who's had inconsistent playing time (as a result of inconsistent play) for most of her career, but she hit a couple of critical threes and had a weakside stickback that stymied any chance that Syracuse had of making a comeback after Gatling left the game.

Key Stat: The Pack were 6-16 from three for 38%, while the Orange were 9-32 for 28%. Both of these teams rely heavily on three point shooting as part of their offense, so it's no surprise that the more efficient team that took better shots from distance wound up winning the game.

Areas for Improvement: The Orange were weak in the post and only got physical after the fact, leading to fouls. Leary needed to body up Gatling much earlier than she did, and she did a poor job responding at the other end. State managed their minutes as well as one could expect, but they were a little casual sometimes trying to get the ball into the post in the first half.

Ramifications: Both of these teams are heading for the NCAA tournament. Syracuse looks like a six or seven seed, and their athleticism could give certain opponents trouble. The Pack will be in real trouble with Gatling, especially against a team as good as Notre Dame. The goal for the Pack will be getting Gatling back for the NCAA tournament.
