North Carolina's depth and physical play was too much for Wake Forest as the #6 seeded Tar Heels survived and advanced with a 69-65 victory in Thursday's ACC Tournament second round nightcap. The game was delayed for 23 minutes due to a power outage.

GREENSBORO -- Diamond DeShields scored 17 points and the North Carolina Tar Heels erased a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Wake Forest 69-65 in Thursday's second round of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament. North Carolina scored the first 14 points of the second half, and rendered the Deacons scoreless for nearly six and a half minutes before a Millesa Calicott three ended the drought for Wake Forest.

The Tar Heels' comeback was spurred on by a defensive intensity and pressure that rattled the Deacons into 16 second half turnovers. North Carolina was credited with 15 steals, and from courtside it seemed like at least six of them were on inbounds plays. The Heels' length and athleticism harassed the young Deacs into mistakes that proved costly down the stretch.

Wake Forest was led once again by Dearica Hamby, who scored 29 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Senior Chelsea Douglas scored 20 in her last game as a Demon Deacon, the last of which was a three as time wound down. Only three other players scored for Wake Forest, including an eight-point effort from Kandice Ball.

Top Performers

  1. Dearica Hamby, Wake Forest 29 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals. Hamby followed up a big night against Pittsburgh with a bigger night against UNC and former high school teammate DeShields. She will be a legitimate ACC Player of the Year candidate going into her senior season.

  2. Chelsea Douglas, Wake Forest 20 points. Douglas looked disconsolate immediately after the game. Despite being denied along the perimeter, she found success getting to the rim and drawing contact. Douglas scored 20 despite making only two three-pointers.

  3. Diamond DeShields, North Carolina 17 points, 8 rebounds. DeShields once again took bragging rights from her former teammate Hamby, but it wasn't easy. Perhaps her biggest shot was an ice-cold three from the corner she drained with 1:44 remaining, mere seconds after Wake Forest had re-taken the lead.

Game Analysis

Why North Carolina won: Their athleticism allows them to play and aggressive, trapping defense and it rattled the Deacs into 26 turnovers- 16 in the second half. Live ball turnovers against the Heels are a recipe for disaster.

Why Wake Forest lost: We can sit here and talk about turnovers and the Tar Heel's defense all day, but truthfully Wake Forest needed someone else to step up the offense tonight. Having only two weapons makes the Deacs awfully easy to defend.

The Game Turned When...: North Carolina scored the first 14 points of the second half and took the lead in the process.

X-Factor: With nearly 17 minutes remaining, the Greensboro Coliseum suffered a power outage that delayed the game for 23 minutes. It couldn't have come at a better time for Wake Forest, who couldn't even inbound the ball at that point as the Heels were on a 9-0 run.

Key Stat: This game was about turnovers, so I'll go back to the 15 steals for North Carolina.

Areas for Improvement: Wake Forest needs offensive firepower, especially with the loss of Chelsea Douglas. Perhaps they'll find it in one of the blue-chip recruits Jen Hoover signed late in 2013. North Carolina is going to cause UNC Associate Head Coach Andrew Calder to lose his hair if they can't play with intensity consistently. When they're on, they are scary.

Ramifications: Wake makes the short trek back to Winston-Salem to ponder life without Chelsea Douglas, while UNC gets to play Maryland in the final game of the quarterfinal round Friday. Terp coach Brenda Frese was seated courtside for both of the night games, scouting.

They Said It: "In the second half our team picked up the intensity defensively," Calder said. "And we mixed up a couple of traps in there with our man-to-man defense. I thought the defense that Brittany did on Douglas in the second half, Brittany Rountree was outstanding."
