The Nutshell: "Ludis in tres partes divisa est" could have been the Latin bumper sticker catchphrase for NC State's 70-47 season opening victory over St. Bonaventure Friday, but first year head coach Wes Moore had a more down to earth description: "It was the The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly." Indeed, "The Good" for NC State came in the middle 20 minutes of the game, where they put the Bonnies away, but it started off with "The Bad." The Pack began looking surprisingly comfortable in their newly styled 4-out 1-in offensive sets, as Kody Burke staked NC State a 7-2 lead. But that plan was abruptly disrupted when center Markeisha Gatling took an early seat, fouling twice before the first media time out. The Bonnies' Gabrielle Richmond responded with a personal 5-0 run over four somewhat excruciating minutes, during which State couldn't buy a basket. But then freshman Miah Spencer came off the State bench to provide a spark, scoring six straight, and perhaps more importantly helping the Pack to regain their rhythm. That led to the true knockout punches that determined the game. State turned their superior quickness and length into points from steals and offensive rebounds, doubling their lead from 15-7 to 31-27. A 21-0 run to start the second half for all intents and purposes ended competition, with the exclamation points coming on threes by Spencer, Myisha Goodwin-Coleman, and Breezy Williams twice. After that point it got sloppy, with some of State's deep bench getting run against the Bonnie rotation players. The Pack gave back 12 points of their lead en route to the final 70-47 margin, and many of those scores for the Bonnies came from the line. But the rough stretch was valuable experience for the newcomers against an opponent just two years removed from a Sweet 16 appearance. Indeed, Moore noted that 42 of the 47 Bonnies' total points came in the paint or from the line, and that the Pack defense still had a way to go. Moore's first win in Reynolds was #777 in program history, and well received by the State faithful in attendance. State shared the ball well with assists on 18 of their 23 baskets leading to balanced scoring (Goodwin-Coleman, Burke, and Spencer led the Pack with 11 each, Ashley and Breezy Williams had 9 and 8 respectively). State also finished 12-14 from the line, quite notable for a team that shot under 70% last year. These positive traits will serve the Pack well if maintained through the ACC season.

Link to this Photo Coach Moore was pleased with the win, but didn't stop being a coach:
Coach Moore was pleased with the win, but didn't stop being a coach: "?We still have a long ways to go. Defensively, we are still fouling way too much, as you guys noticed. It?s not a whole lot of fun to watch for you or me. We want to be aggressive and try to dictate what the offense does, but in doing so you have to play defense with your feet instead of your hands. We have to clean that up."
