Noles Hold Off Canes in Rivalry Rematch
March 8, 2013

The Nutshell: Florida State used an alert defensive performance and some timely medium range jumpshots to pull ahead of Miami late in the first half and fend off a number of second-half challenges to advance to the semifinals of the 2012 ACC Tournament. In a game where both teams clanked a number of shots, Florida State's ability to protect the ball (just 8 turnovers) and force miscues (15 steals) gave them ten more cracks at the basket than Miami. They put them to good use, as Chasity Clayton drained a quartet of 18' jumpshots at crucial times in the game. Late in the first half, she hit back-to-back jumpers to put FSU up by 3 and then drove in for a layup late in the half that made it 10. Miami wasn't quite conceding those jump shots, but they were fairly low-percentage shots that she confidently made.

Miami simply didn't have enough shotmakers to keep up with Alexa Deluzio and FSU's two-headed point guard duo of Morgan Toles and Cheetah Delgado. That was especially true considering that Miami's big outside threat, Stefanie Yderstrom, was just 3-12 from the field. FSU did a great job going after Miami's weak ballhandlers (Pepper Wilson had 6 turnovers) and wilder players (Suriya McGuire also had 6 turnovers). This was smart, because the Noles had trouble handling 6-6 center Wilson, who was dominant with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Miami made a run in the second half as FSU was never quite able to put them away, but they only drew as close as three points. Miami was down 4 with 7:21 to go and missed multiple cracks at the basket. Deluzio then sank 4 foul shots in a row to take FSU out of danger.

Top Performers:

  1. Alexa Deluzio, FSU. 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals. She was everywhere for FSU and was their one consistent shotmaker from long range. She went over, under and around screens to score and alertly tipped a number of loose balls.

  2. Chasity Clayton, FSU. 10 points, 3 rebounds. She hit a bunch of jumpers and stretched Miami's defense to the point of breaking.

  3. Pepper Wilson, Miami. 18 points, 18 rebounds. The Canes were able to get her the ball early and often, and she played through foul trouble to have a huge impact.

Why FSU Won: They scored 19 points off turnovers, took care of the ball and had excellent scoring balance, with four players in double figures.

Why Miami Lost: The Canes had too many careless turnovers and couldn't get anything going on offense outside of the paint or the foul line. Their two biggest guns, Morgan Stroman and Stefanie Yderstrom, combined to go 5-19 from the field.

The Game Turned When...: Suriya McGuire of Miami missed a finger roll at the rim, and an alert Cheetah Delgado fired a pass ahead to Leo Rodriguez, who had leaked out for an easy layup. Miami never had a chance to draw closer again.

X-Factor: Bench play. FSU had a 22-5 edge in bench points, as Clayton had 10, Cheetah Delgado was tremendous with 12 points, 5 assists and 3 steals, and Lauren Coleman had 4 crucial rebounds--including the board that produced the game-turning play. Miami's bench produced just 5 points along with 6 turnovers.

Areas For Improvement: Florida State needed more production from Natasha Howard, whose foul trouble made her tentative in her 18 minutes. That's a big reason why the Noles were outrebounded by the Canes.

Ramifications: Miami should be relatively secure in getting an NCAA at-large bid. They're in the forties in the RPI and have two big wins against Penn State and Duke under their belts. Expect them to be a 10 seed - a dangerous one. Florida State picked up a quality win, knocked off their rivals three times in the same season, and has a chance to do more.
