The Nutshell: In a game that was highly entertaining for over thirty minutes, Wake Forest came back from ten down late in the first half to blow out Georgia Tech in the second. In the early going, the teams traded jumpshots and drives, with the Jackets getting to the hoop whenever they wanted. Tech's Ty Marshall was especially dominant in the early going, and it felt at times like she could drop 40 on the Deacs. Marshall scored 16 points in the first half as the Jackets feasted on Wake errors, to the tune of 12-0 in points off turnovers. Another big key in the first half for GT was a 12-7 edge in second chance points, especially from Dani Hamilton-Carter, who came off the bench for 8 points and 6 rebounds. Wake scrapped enough to be down by just 7 at the half, surviving foul trouble with Garcia, Asia Williams and Mykala Walker.

Wake quickly drew closer in the second half, as Williams hit a trio of big shots. Tech fought back with a three point play by Brittany Jackson and a jumper by Dawnn Maye to make it 52-46 with 14:38 left. Then the bottom fell out for the Jackets. Dearica Hamby hit a jumper, Asia Williams scored in transition and Lakevia Boykin drained a three to put Wake up for good. That was part of a 14-0 run that essentially sent packing. This was a game where experience played a big part in the final outcome. Wake's senior-laden team weathered the storm of Tech's attack and took much better care of the ball in the second half, committing just 5 second half turnovers. The Jackets didn't know whom to guard, as Boykin and Chelsea Douglas took turns sinking big threes. Hamby ran the floor like a deer and finished in transition, while Garcia played like an All-American. She blocked shots, hit spinning layups and took care of the ball. Her commanding, physical play was the key to Wake being able to play inside-out. Tech had no answer for her, and as a result, the Deacons were able to build momentum and earn a Friday quarterfinal matchup with Maryland.

Top Performers:

  1. Lakevia Boykin, Wake Forest. 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. She had a good old-fashioned gunslinger kind of game.

  2. Dearica Hamby, Wake Forest. 17 points, 5 rebounds. The rangy forward was brilliant in transition and off the dribble.

  3. Ty Marshall, Georgia Tech. 22 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals. She was held to just 6 points in the second half, and no one stepped up to help her.

Why Wake Forest Won: The Deacs committed just 5 turnovers in the second half, forced the Jackets into tough shots and absolutely dominated the paint. They were simply the more aggressive team in the second half and pressed their advantage to blow out their opponent when they were in a nice scoring rhythm.

Why Georgia Tech Lost: Once their points off turnovers edge disappeared, the Jackets struggled to generate much offense. Their press was completely ineffective in the second half and they spent much of the game losing Wake's shooters. Speaking of which, the Jackets simply couldn't knock down long-range shots.

The Game Turned When...: Wake Forest went on a 14-0 early in the second half that erased a six point deficit. The Jackets scored just 13 points in the last fourteen minutes of the game. Boykin hit a dagger of a three that gave Wake a lead they'd never again relinquish after a big defensive play by Hamby. Garcia and Douglas followed that up with huge shots of their own.

X-Factor: Sandra Garcia. A frequently disinterested but talented player, Garcia was brillian in the second half of this game. She wound up with a double-double, took charges, hit tough spinning shots in the lane and blocked shots.

Areas For Improvement: Wake's gunslinging guards sometimes took bad shots from three early in the shot clock. They also put Georgia Tech on the line 21 times.

Ramifications: Georgia Tech's WNIT ambitions are over, as they finish with a losing record overall. PIcked to finish third in the ACC, their youth and lack of skilled size proved to be their downfall. Ty Marshall had a great year, but didn't get enough consistent support to beat good teams. The Jackets will return virtually every important player, get forward Tjasa Gortnar back from injury and bring in a great recruiting class. Wake lives to play another day against Maryland, proving once again that Greensboro agrees with them.
